We recently learned that Yaw Bonna Boadi, the Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at Kwadaso in the Ashanti Region, has been charged for his involvement in illegal mining activities at Nimbreso. Mr. Bonna Boadi, also known as 'Chairman Bonna', has pleaded not guilty to two counts, including facilitating the participation of a non-Ghanaian in a mining operation without a license.
Furthermore, he, along with Shi Yueming, who is reported to be the former boyfriend of convicted Galamsey kingpin Aisha Huang, were charged for conspiracy. Shi Yueming also pleaded not guilty to undertaking a mining operation without a license and attempting to commit an offense, as well as harboring a criminal.
Both individuals have been granted bail by the High Court in Accra, presided over by Justice Lydia Osei Marfo. In the case of 'Chairman Bonna', the bail sum was set at 200,000 with one surety to be justified. Additionally, it was directed that he should report to the National Intelligence Bureau office in Kumasi once a month on every Monday.
The State Attorney, Watkins Adama, presented the brief facts of the case to the Court, revealing that Shi Yueming is believed to have taken over the businesses of Aisha Huang in Kumasi after her repatriation from Ghana. It was also disclosed that Shi Yueming was instrumental in the acquisition of forged or irregularly obtained immigration permits for other Chinese nationals and had undertaken illegal mining operations at Nimbreso.
The prosecution also highlighted that both accused individuals shared the proceeds of their mining activities on a weekly basis and that Yaw Bonna Boadi trespassed on a parcel of land belonging to FGM Mining Company without notice, attempting mining activities that were eventually halted.
The case has been adjourned to May 21, 2024, and the prosecution has been ordered to file fresh disclosures before the next court sitting.
It is essential to note that these are serious allegations, and the legal process will determine the outcome. We will continue to monitor this case and provide updates as they become available.
