We are faced with a deeply distressing case that has recently come before the Ashaiman District Court. Franklin Mensah, a 29-year-old driver, has been accused of the tragic murder of his girlfriend's three-and-a-half-year-old daughter.
During the court proceedings, Mensah, who has been charged with murder, did not enter a plea. He has been remanded by the court and is scheduled to reappear in two weeks, under the jurisdiction of His Worship Derrick Parden Eshun.
According to Chief Inspector Afi Blihia, who is prosecuting the case, the complainant, Ms. Joy James, a waitress, entrusted her daughter to Mensah's care while she went to work on May 3, 2024. Tragically, upon her return home, she received news from a neighbor that her daughter had become unconscious after an altercation with Mensah.
It was reported that Mensah, in an attempt to console the crying child with his phone, became agitated when the device was thrown to the ground and subsequently struck the young girl, leading to her loss of consciousness. Despite efforts to revive her at the Tema General Hospital, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Mensah was subsequently taken into custody and presented before the court. However, it is important to note that the case remains under active investigation.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of children and the importance of safeguarding their well-being. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy as we await further developments in this case.
