The residents of Konongo in the Ashanti Region have expressed growing concerns about the rampant ‘galamsey’ activities taking place in close proximity to the Kumasi-Konongo highway that runs through the town.

Recent investigations conducted by various media outlets have uncovered the presence of excavators and other mining equipment being used openly during daylight hours for these illegal activities.

Addressing the press regarding this troubling development, Reverend Raphael Oppong, Head Pastor of the New Life Church of Light, pointed fingers at local leaders, accusing them of being complicit in the illicit mining operations.

"It appears that we are lacking effective leadership in this country. It is difficult to believe that such illegal activities are being carried out without the knowledge of the local authorities. Our leaders seem unwilling to confront the galamsey challenge and instead choose to feign opposition to it," expressed Reverend Oppong with frustration.

He further highlighted the blatant destruction of water bodies by the miners, emphasizing the lack of accountability for their actions. In response, he declared plans to mobilize a large-scale demonstration against the local leaders.

Several other residents echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the imminent danger posed to the community by these ‘galamsey’ activities. They criticized the government for its perceived failure to decisively address this pressing issue.

The ongoing ‘galamsey’ activities not only pose environmental hazards but also reflect a failure in governance and enforcement. It is imperative for the relevant authorities to take swift and decisive action to curb these illegal mining operations and protect the well-being of the community.

The situation in Konongo serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for effective measures to combat illegal mining activities across the country. It is incumbent upon both local and national leadership to prioritize this issue and work towards sustainable solutions. The collective efforts of all stakeholders are essential in safeguarding the environment and ensuring the welfare of our communities.
