In a significant breakthrough against criminal activities, the Ghana Police Service has successfully apprehended three suspected armed robbers while recovering stolen items and a concealed weapon. The operation, carried out on May 5, 2026, in Bolgatanga, Upper East Region, was the result of an intelligence-led investigation aimed at curbing a series of robbery incidents in northern Ghana. Tragically, one of the suspects, identified as Amadu Rahman, passed away during the operation.
Arrest of Suspects and Initial Findings
The suspects—Abdulai Ibrahim, Amadu Rahman, Amadu Sulemana (alias Saaga), and Adu Yakubu—were arrested in connection with multiple robbery operations spanning the Upper East and North East regions. According to a statement released by the Ghana Police Service on May 6, 2026, the group had allegedly been involved in a string of criminal activities, including robbing motorbikes and mobile phones.
Investigations revealed that the suspects had gathered in Gbane, a mining community in the Talensi District, on May 4, 2026, after traveling from Yagaba and Fumbisi. Their objective was reportedly to execute another robbery operation in the area. The gang is believed to have targeted both individuals and businesses, including mining sites where gold and large sums of money were stolen.
Confessions and Evidence Uncovered
During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to carrying out numerous robberies within the Talensi District and along major roads connecting Yagaba to Fumbisi and Nanguruma in the North East Region. Notably, they admitted their involvement in a high-profile robbery at the Vikandi Phone Shop in Bolgatanga on March 22, 2025. This incident had gained widespread attention after a video surfaced online showing armed men wielding an AK47 assault rifle during the attack.
Further investigations led the suspects to disclose details about their activities at mining sites in Gbane. These sites were frequently targeted for their valuable gold deposits and cash holdings. Acting on information provided by the suspects, police were able to locate a hidden AK47 rifle with serial number 68100563 and 87 rounds of live ammunition. The weapon was found concealed in a fertiliser sack on a farm near Biung, close to Gbane.
Tragic Turn of Events
While assisting law enforcement officers in retrieving the weapon, one of the suspects, Amadu Rahman, reportedly collapsed unexpectedly. He was immediately rushed to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital for medical attention but was pronounced dead upon arrival. His body has been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and further examination through autopsy.
Legal Proceedings and Next Steps
The three remaining suspects—Abdulai Ibrahim, Amadu Sulemana (Saaga), and Adu Yakubu—are currently in police custody. Authorities have indicated that they will be arraigned before court to face charges related to their alleged criminal activities.
This operation underscores the Ghana Police Service's commitment to ensuring public safety and combating crime across the country. The swift response and meticulous investigative work have not only disrupted a dangerous criminal network but also sent a strong message to others who may seek to engage in similar illegal activities.
The Police Service continues to urge citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help maintain law and order. The public is also encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement agencies as they work tirelessly to create a safer environment for all Ghanaians.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of community-police collaboration in addressing crime and ensuring security in our communities. The Ghana Police Service remains resolute in its mission to uphold justice and protect lives and property across the nation.
