In a recent development, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has taken a firm stance on the issue of self-promotion among teachers within the Ghana Education Service (GES). The committee has directed the GES to conduct a thorough investigation into the actions of 18 teachers in the Amansie Central district who reportedly took it upon themselves to promote their own positions without adhering to the established laws and regulations governing the GES.

According to a report from the Amansie Central Education Directorate, these teachers not only upgraded their positions without the necessary documentation but also proceeded to increase their salaries as a result, leading to a significant financial loss amounting to GH¢188,000 for the state. This revelation has raised serious concerns regarding the integrity and adherence to protocol within the education sector.

Vincent Ben Ameyaw, the Amansie Central District Education Director, has disclosed that efforts have been made to address this issue, with an encouraging recovery of GH¢34,000 thus far. However, there remains a substantial balance of GH¢152,966.54 that is yet to be recovered. Mr. Ameyaw emphasized that these unauthorized promotions were carried out without proper approval, describing the situation as a "backdoor affair."

It is evident that such actions not only undermine the established procedures within the GES but also have significant financial implications for the state. The PAC's directive for a thorough investigation is a crucial step towards ensuring accountability and upholding the standards of professionalism within the education sector.

Moving forward, it is imperative for the GES to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into this matter and take appropriate disciplinary measures against those found to have violated the regulations. Moreover, there is a pressing need to strengthen internal controls and oversight to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Ultimately, it is essential for all stakeholders within the education sector to uphold the highest standards of ethics and governance, ensuring that such breaches of protocol are swiftly identified and addressed. The integrity of the education system must be preserved, and decisive action is required to rectify this concerning issue in Amansie Central.
