We are deeply concerned by the recent wave of water meter theft in the Ashanti region, particularly in the Suame Municipality. The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has reported a significant increase in the number of stolen water supply meters, with 71 cases reported by customers in the region this year alone.

In response to this alarming trend, a watch committee formed by the Unit Committee of New Suame took action and successfully apprehended two individuals suspected of being involved in the theft of water supply meters. The identities of the individuals are being withheld for security reasons.

Mr. Ebenezer Padi Narh, the Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of GWCL, emphasized the proactive measures taken by the Unit Committee members and volunteers within the community to address this issue. Their efforts led to the retrieval of three water meters and taps from the individuals apprehended.

The rampant theft of water supply meters not only poses a financial burden on the affected customers but also disrupts the essential water supply services provided by GWCL. It is imperative for all stakeholders, including residents, local authorities, and law enforcement agencies, to collaborate in addressing and preventing such criminal activities.

We commend the swift action taken by the Unit Committee of New Suame and encourage other communities to remain vigilant against such illicit activities. GWCL remains committed to working closely with relevant stakeholders to safeguard water supply infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted service delivery to our valued customers.

The apprehension of the individuals involved in meter theft sends a strong message that such illegal acts will not be tolerated, and those responsible will be held accountable. We urge anyone with information related to meter theft or any suspicious activities to report to the appropriate authorities.

Together, we can combat meter theft and uphold the integrity of water supply services in the Ashanti region.
