We recently received reports from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) regarding the interception of a large consignment of dried cocoa beans for smuggling in Dambai, located in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region.

The consignment, which was cleverly concealed as crates of minerals, was transported via three trucks believed to have originated from the Ashanti region. The route taken involved passing through the Eastern region and crossing the Volta River from Afram Plains into Oti, where it was ultimately intercepted by NIB officials. As a result of this interception, the drivers and their assistants are currently in custody, aiding ongoing investigations.

This incident sheds light on the concerning issue of smuggling and other cross-border crimes within the Oti Region. Reports have indicated a surge in cocoa smuggling activities, particularly in areas such as Guan, Kadjebi, Nkwanta North, and Nkwanta South Municipality. It has been observed that cocoa smugglers are increasingly utilizing the northern corridors in the Oti Region to transport illicit cocoa beans to neighboring Togo.

The illicit trade has raised alarms within the cocoa industry, with officials expressing concerns about the role played by unscrupulous individuals and networks in facilitating these activities. It is believed that attractive prices offered by Togolese buyers, coupled with unregulated marketing in Togo, are fueling this detrimental trade.

In response to these developments, officials from the Ghana Cocoa Board have urged the public to report any cocoa smuggling activities to the relevant security agencies. Furthermore, they have emphasized the importance of incentivizing individuals who provide information leading to the apprehension and prosecution of perpetrators.

It is disconcerting to note that cocoa smugglers have resorted to new tactics in an attempt to evade detection. Reports indicate that they are now using assorted drinks as a means of concealing their contraband while passing through police barriers undetected.

In light of these events, residents have voiced their concerns about the negative impact of cocoa smuggling on Ghana's economy and the livelihoods of farmers. There have been calls for the government to prioritize equipping agencies such as the NIB to effectively address these pressing issues.

One resident, Mr. Shadrach Badekebo James of Dambai, has specifically appealed to the government to recognize and reward the Oti Regional Command of NIB for their unwavering dedication and sacrifices in carrying out their national duty.

As of our latest update, it has been noted that the police are yet to assume control of the case.

The interception of this significant consignment of smuggled cocoa beans underscores the ongoing challenges posed by illicit cross-border activities. It serves as a reminder of the importance of collaborative efforts to safeguard Ghana's cocoa industry and economy. We encourage all citizens to remain vigilant and actively contribute to the fight against cocoa smuggling.
