On November 29, an unfortunate incident occurred on the Akosombo-Accra highway involving one of the vehicles in the convoy of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang. The convoy was returning from the Oti Region following a two-day campaign tour.
Reports indicate that the incident took place between Akuse and Kpong. According to the driver of the affected vehicle, the windshield of his car was shattered after an object was allegedly thrown by a police outrider leading another convoy. The driver suspects that this other convoy was associated with supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The driver recounted that one of the police motor riders in the opposing convoy threw an object directly at his vehicle, causing significant damage to the windshield. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident.
This occurrence has raised concerns about the safety of political convoys and the need for heightened security measures, especially as Ghana approaches its election period. While tensions can run high during political campaigns, it is crucial for all stakeholders to prioritize peaceful and respectful engagements.
Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s team has not issued an official statement regarding the incident at this time. It is expected that law enforcement authorities will thoroughly investigate the matter to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the event and take appropriate action if necessary.
As Ghana continues its democratic journey, it is imperative to uphold principles of peace and unity. Political parties, their supporters, and security personnel must work together to ensure a safe and conducive environment for all during this critical period.
