In a distressing turn of events, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong, and his campaign team were reportedly ambushed by armed men while traveling in the Bono Region. The incident, which occurred late on Tuesday, November 26, has raised serious concerns about the safety of political figures and their teams during the election campaign season.
The attack took place around 11 p.m. as the team was traveling between Nsakaw and Wenchi after concluding a campaign tour in Namasa, located in the Tain Constituency. According to Evans Ofori, the Bono Regional Chairman of the NDP, the group was caught off guard by a sudden ambush from armed, masked assailants.
Recounting the harrowing experience, Mr. Ofori explained, “We were on our way to Wenchi from Namasa. As we approached Wenchi, the policeman with us noticed a barrier and advised us to slow down. We assumed it was a police barrier since we had seen one at the same spot earlier in the day. However, armed masked men suddenly emerged and began firing at us. We had to reverse quickly. Our vehicle’s windows were shattered, causing minor cuts, but thankfully, no one sustained serious injuries.”
The quick thinking of the team and their accompanying police officer likely prevented more severe consequences. Despite the attack, the team managed to retreat safely. Shortly afterward, a police patrol team arrived at the scene and escorted them to Wenchi, where they filed an official report at the local police station.
“I must commend the police officer who was with us for his professionalism in ensuring our safety. Our flagbearer and all team members are safe,” Mr. Ofori added.
While no serious injuries were reported, this incident underscores the growing concerns over security during political campaigns. The NDP has yet to release an official statement regarding the attack, but it is expected that they will call for enhanced security measures to protect political candidates and their teams.
This unfortunate event highlights the need for vigilance and increased collaboration between political parties and law enforcement agencies to ensure a peaceful and secure campaign period. The attack also serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by political figures working tirelessly to engage with constituents across the country.
As investigations into this incident proceed, it is hoped that the perpetrators will be brought to justice promptly and that measures will be put in place to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
