In a heart-wrenching incident that has left a community in mourning, a 27-year-old nursing mother, Koyraga Nbeduma, was tragically shot dead by two unidentified gunmen on the Tilli–Widnaba road in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Monday, September 21, 2026, as Ms. Nbeduma and her companion, Barikisu Ali, were returning to Widnaba after milling corn in Azupupunga, a neighboring community.
The attack unfolded as the two women made their way home, with the gunmen reportedly ambushing them. In a fortunate turn of events, Ms. Ali managed to escape the attackers and seek refuge, albeit leaving her bicycle behind in the process. The tragic aftermath revealed Ms. Nbeduma's three-month-old baby abandoned by the roadside, while her lifeless body was discovered approximately 200 meters from the road in a nearby maize farm.
The Zebilla Police were promptly notified of the incident and subsequently transported Ms. Nbeduma's body to a local hospital. On-duty nurse Inusah Lukman confirmed her death, after which the body was released to her grieving family for burial.
The deceased's family has been left shattered by this unexpected tragedy. Family member Ali Sulemana expressed the family's profound shock and devastation, remarking that they never anticipated such a tragic outcome when Ms. Nbeduma left home.
Zebilla Police Commander, DSP Jackson Kpirtufe, has confirmed the occurrence of the incident and stated that the motive behind this heinous attack remains unknown. Investigations have been initiated to uncover the circumstances leading to Ms. Nbeduma's death and to identify those responsible for this senseless act of violence.
