Nkwanta South, Oti Region, Ghana – A surge in violence within the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region has resulted in the tragic loss of four lives. This renewed conflict, stemming from a protracted five-year land dispute, has left the community in mourning and heightened concerns regarding escalating tensions in the area.
The recent outbreak of violence witnessed significant destruction of property, including the vandalism of vehicles belonging to the Formed Police Unit (FPU) responsible for border patrols and the protection of the Kyabobo Game National Park. Residential structures were also damaged in the clashes.
While an official statement from law enforcement agencies is pending, reports indicate that both residents and individuals not directly involved in the land dispute were caught in the crossfire. The perpetrators remain at large, necessitating a comprehensive investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Approximately ten individuals sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical attention at Nkwanta St. Joseph Catholic Hospital and the Municipal government hospital. The severity of their injuries is yet to be fully assessed.
The ongoing land dispute has demonstrably failed to be resolved through existing mechanisms, leading to repeated cycles of violence and loss of life. The gravity of this situation demands immediate and decisive intervention from both local and national authorities.
Efforts must focus not only on restoring order and apprehending the perpetrators but also on establishing a sustainable process for resolving the underlying land conflict. A comprehensive approach that involves all stakeholders is crucial to preventing further bloodshed and ensuring the long-term peace and security of the Nkwanta South community. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
