The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has once again thwarted attempts to smuggle cocoa beans out of the country.  In two separate incidents within a two-week period, officers intercepted significant quantities of cocoa beans destined for neighboring Togo.

The first incident occurred at the Gagbiri Inland Checkpoint in the Tempane District. Officers under the Pulimakom Sector Command, acting on intelligence, intercepted two drums of cocoa beans being transported on a tricycle towards Togo via the unapproved Wurianaga road.  The individual responsible for the shipment fled the scene upon encountering the officers.  Investigations are underway to apprehend the culprit, according to a statement released by Assistant Commissioner of Immigration (ACP) M. Amoako-Atta, Head of Public Affairs.

This follows a similar incident last week at the Ave-Havi border post.  Officers from the Akanu Sector Command, collaborating with the Ghana Revenue Authority-Customs Division, intercepted a truck (registration AS 2103-W) driven by Ibrahim Fatawu.  The truck contained 1,115 gallons filled with cocoa beans, also intended for smuggling into Togo.  The cocoa beans have been handed over to COCOBOD officials, the truck impounded, and the driver is assisting with ongoing investigations.

These seizures highlight the persistent challenge of cocoa bean smuggling and its detrimental impact on Ghana's economy and state revenue.  The GIS has issued a stern warning to potential smugglers, emphasizing the severe consequences of their actions.

In response to these incidents, Comptroller-General of Immigration Kwame Asuah Takyi has instructed all Border Commanders to enhance patrols along known smuggling routes and actively engage community members in raising awareness about the economic repercussions of smuggling.  This collaborative approach aims to strengthen border security and combat illicit activities.  The GIS's proactive measures demonstrate its commitment to protecting Ghana's economic interests and upholding the integrity of its borders.
