Tragedy struck Thursday night, February 20th, when two individuals lost their lives in a motorbike accident at the Tono riverbank in the Kasena-Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region. The accident highlights the ongoing danger posed by the deteriorating condition of the riverbank and the disregard for safety measures.
According to eyewitness accounts, the two victims were traveling from Navrongo towards Chaina when their motorbike veered off the road and plunged into the dam. Farmers discovered the bodies Friday morning while tending to their irrigation systems. Local police were immediately notified and retrieved the bodies, transporting them to the Navrongo hospital.
The deceased, both residents of Chaina in the Kasena-Nankana West District, had reportedly visited Navrongo and were returning home when the accident occurred.
The incident underscores a persistent problem in the area. Despite the erection of barricades sometime ago to deter riders from using the dangerous riverbank path, many continue to ignore the warnings, leading to repeated accidents. The deteriorating condition of the riverbank itself contributes significantly to the risk.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the need for increased safety measures and stricter enforcement of existing regulations. The community must work together with local authorities to address the dangerous conditions of the riverbank and prevent future tragedies. Further investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances leading to the accident. The names of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
