A man sustained gunshot wounds on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, after customs officers opened fire on a vehicle attempting to evade arrest.  The incident occurred around 9:00 p.m. in Sogakope.

The pursued vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz with registration number GC 3361-14, was reportedly carrying uncustomed goods.  Customs officials pursued the vehicle, ultimately firing shots that struck the rear windshield.  Tragically, Alex, an engineer at the South Tongu District Assembly, was struck by two stray bullets while waiting by the roadside.

Eyewitnesses recounted the events to Citi News, describing a tense chase culminating in gunfire.  One witness stated, “A pickup was chasing a car and stopped in front of us; seconds later, we heard gunshots. Before we could realize what happened, a man waiting for a vehicle to Accra was hit by the bullets. We identified those who shot as customs officials.”  The witness confirmed that the customs officers apprehended the driver of the Mercedes-Benz.

Alex was immediately transported to Comboni Hospital for treatment.  His current condition remains undisclosed.

Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.  The circumstances surrounding the shooting and the justification for the use of firearms remain unclear.  Investigations are likely underway to determine the full sequence of events and ascertain any potential liabilities.  This incident underscores the need for clear protocols and training regarding the use of force by law enforcement agencies.  The potential for unintended consequences, as tragically demonstrated in this case, highlights the importance of responsible and measured responses during high-speed pursuits.  Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
