In a recent development at Circuit Court 3, Accra, presided over by Mrs. Susana Eduful, ten individuals, including a 17-year-old minor, have been remanded into prison custody following their arraignment on charges of unlawful possession of firearms and preparation to commit a violent crime. The hearing took place on Thursday, August 7, 2025.
Arrest and Investigation
The accused were apprehended during a joint security operation conducted on August 5, 2025, at Zaabu Zongo, a suburb of Bawku. The operation was part of a cordon-and-search initiative led by the Joint Peace Enforcement Team and overseen by Captain D.Z. Mahama. Those arrested range in age from 17 to 37 years old.
Police reports indicate that the operation uncovered ammunition in the possession of two individuals—Rauf Naziru, a 19-year-old blacksmith, and Issaka Tijani, 34. Both were unable to provide lawful justification for their possession of the items. According to the prosecution, the items recovered included 15 empty M16 shells, 7 empty AK47 shells, and 9 empty G3 shells. Naziru claimed that these were materials he used for crafting rings and scrapers, denying their classification as firearms.
The remaining suspects were detained within the same vicinity during curfew hours. Security personnel reported that they were found gathering without any clear purpose, raising suspicions given the restrictions in place. Following their arrest, all accused individuals and the recovered items were transferred to the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit on August 6, where they were cautioned and detained.
Court Appearance and Charges
During the court proceedings, all accused pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them. These include:
1. **Possession of firearms without lawful authority**, contrary to the Arms and Ammunition Act, 1972 (NRCD 9), as amended.
2. **Preparation to commit a crime**, specifically offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace under the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
The prosecutor, ASP Issah Achibari, informed the court that investigations were ongoing and requested that the accused be held in custody to facilitate further inquiries. The court granted this request and directed the prosecution to serve all disclosures to the defense counsel. The case has been adjourned to September 1, 2025.
