The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has spearheaded a high-level police delegation to the Savannah Region in response to violent clashes that have tragically claimed multiple lives and left several others injured.
In an official statement, the Ghana Police Service outlined the objectives of the visit, emphasizing the importance of engaging key stakeholders in the affected communities. The IGP and his delegation aim to meet with traditional leaders, opinion leaders, and community representatives from Sawla, Gbeniyiri, Giniri, and other impacted areas to deliberate on strategies for restoring peace and preventing further unrest.
The Police Service underscored that this initiative is part of a broader security framework designed to strengthen its presence in the region and mitigate the risk of future escalations. It also called for calm and cooperation from all parties involved. “We urge all sides to remain calm and support the work of the security teams to achieve lasting peace,” the statement read.
The clashes, which erupted on Sunday, August 24, in Gbeniyiri, were reportedly triggered by a land dispute. The violence resulted in at least 10 fatalities and left six others injured, with three individuals currently in critical condition.
To stabilize the situation and restore order, reinforcement teams comprising personnel from the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, and other security agencies have been deployed to the region. Their presence is expected to bolster efforts aimed at ensuring the safety of residents and facilitating dialogue among conflicting parties.
The IGP's visit highlights the government's commitment to addressing security concerns in the Savannah Region and fostering long-term peace. As investigations into the incident continue, authorities have urged all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and reconciliation over conflict.
The Ghana Police Service remains resolute in its mission to protect lives and property while working collaboratively with local communities to maintain harmony.
