The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA) has issued a firm directive to political parties, their supporters, and the general public, cautioning against the possession or use of any form of weapon as the nation prepares for the upcoming Akwatia by-election. In an official statement, NACSA emphasized that the carrying of firearms or improvised weapons will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
The Commission outlined that individuals found in possession of weapons—including firearms, tasers, pepper spray, knives, or machetes—will face immediate arrest and prosecution. This measure is part of broader efforts to safeguard Ghana's peace and stability during the electoral process.
NACSA expressed concern over the growing threat posed by politically motivated violence, which is often exacerbated by inflammatory rhetoric and the illegal possession of arms. Such actions, the Commission warned, undermine the democratic process and pose significant risks to national security.
“The use of arms or threats of violence must never be tolerated as a means of gaining political advantage,” NACSA stated unequivocally. The Commission urged political party leaders to take proactive steps in promoting peace among their supporters and to ensure adherence to lawful conduct throughout the electoral period.
To ensure a secure environment for the by-election, NACSA disclosed that it is collaborating closely with key stakeholders, including the Ghana Police Service, Electoral Commission, National Security Council, and civil society organisations. These coordinated efforts aim to maintain peace before, during, and after the polls.
In its concluding remarks, NACSA called on all political actors to prioritize national stability over partisan interests and to uphold the rule of law. The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a peaceful electoral process that reflects the principles of democracy and unity.
As Ghana approaches this critical juncture, NACSA’s warning serves as a reminder that peace and security are essential pillars of the nation’s democratic journey.
