In an effort to ensure a peaceful and secure environment for the upcoming by-election scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025, the Eastern South Regional Police Command has conducted a series of targeted security operations in Akwatia. These proactive measures have resulted in the arrest of ten suspects and the retrieval of nine firearms, underscoring the authorities' commitment to maintaining law and order during this critical period.

The operations, which included snap checks and focused interventions, were aimed at preventing the unlawful possession of firearms and deterring potential acts of violence that could disrupt the democratic process. Among the seized weapons were eight pump-action guns and one locally manufactured single-barrel firearm, all recovered during separate incidents.

Interception at St. Dominic Hospital

On Friday, August 22, police intercepted a vehicle driven by Bernard Kumi Ofosu at the St. Dominic Hospital premises. During the search, officers uncovered a Tulpar double-barreled pump-action gun, alongside four AAA live cartridges and two blank cartridges. While Ofosu presented a license for the weapon, he remains in custody as authorities verify the authenticity of his documentation. This precautionary measure highlights the police's meticulous approach to ensuring all firearms in circulation are accounted for and legally possessed.

Arrest at Akwatia Y-Junction Snap Check

At a snap checkpoint located at the Akwatia Y-Junction, officers apprehended Joshua Amenuku after discovering 15 live BB cartridges in his possession. A subsequent search of Amenuku's residence revealed an ADLER Tulpar pump-action gun along with five additional cartridges. The discovery raised concerns about the potential misuse of such weapons, prompting swift action from law enforcement.

Checkpoint Operation at Boadua Livingstone

Later that same day, police stationed at the Boadua Livingstone checkpoint arrested Enoch Asiedu and Lu Youyan, a Chinese national, following the discovery of four live cartridges in their Toyota Hilux pickup vehicle. Preliminary investigations suggest that the ammunition is linked to their employer, identified only as Mohammed, who is now being sought by authorities. This incident further underscores the need for vigilance in monitoring activities that could compromise public safety.

Ensuring Peaceful Elections

The Eastern South Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining peace and security in Akwatia as residents prepare to cast their votes in the by-election. The retrieval of these weapons and the arrests made serve as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the community.

Authorities continue to urge citizens to report any suspicious activities or individuals to ensure a safe electoral process. The police remain resolute in their mission to uphold the rule of law and protect the democratic rights of all citizens.

As Akwatia approaches this pivotal moment in its political journey, it is hoped that these security measures will contribute to a peaceful and orderly election day, reflecting the values of democracy and unity.
