In a significant development that underscores the importance of security vigilance, two individuals, including a Chinese national, were apprehended by the Akwatia District Police for possessing live ammunition. The arrest occurred during a routine patrol on the night of Thursday, August 21, 2025, and has raised concerns about safety in the region as political campaigns intensify ahead of a crucial by-election.

The suspects, identified as Enoch Asiedu, 32, and Lu Youyan, 58, were intercepted at the Boadua Livingstone snap checkpoint around 9:00 PM. The duo was traveling in a Toyota Hilux pickup when officers conducting routine checks uncovered four live BB cartridges concealed within the vehicle. Following this discovery, the suspects were immediately taken into custody and transferred to the Akwatia Police Station for further investigation.

Preliminary interrogation revealed that the ammunition purportedly belonged to their employer, identified only as Mohammed, who owns the Toyota Hilux in question. Police have stated that efforts are underway to locate Mohammed and bring him in for questioning to ascertain his involvement in the matter.

The suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue to unravel the circumstances surrounding the possession of the ammunition. Authorities are determined to establish whether this incident is an isolated case or part of a broader security concern, particularly given the heightened political activity in the region.

This arrest comes at a time when security measures in Akwatia are under intense scrutiny. Political parties are ramping up campaigns ahead of what is expected to be a fiercely contested by-election on September 2, 2025. The stakes are high, and tensions are palpable as candidates and their supporters prepare for the electoral showdown.

In response to the growing security concerns, Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno has assured the public that law enforcement agencies are fully committed to maintaining peace and order during this critical period. He emphasized that the police will ensure maximum security throughout the electoral process and issued a stern warning to potential troublemakers to refrain from any attempts to disrupt public order.

The arrest of Asiedu and Youyan serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and robust security measures during politically charged times. As investigations progress, it is hoped that clarity will emerge regarding the origins and intended use of the ammunition found in their possession.

The people of Akwatia await further updates on this matter, trusting that law enforcement authorities will act decisively to uphold safety and justice in the region. With political campaigns reaching fever pitch, maintaining peace and security remains paramount to ensuring a smooth and fair electoral process.
