The Savannah Region of Ghana is witnessing a concerted effort to combat the growing menace of drug abuse and trafficking, with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) leading the charge in partnership with the Ghana Police Service. In a recent operation, a significant quantity of illicit drugs and other illegal substances were confiscated and subsequently destroyed, underscoring the region’s commitment to maintaining law and order.

These enforcement actions are part of a broader strategy to curb the proliferation of narcotics and protect the wellbeing of citizens. Individuals found in possession of these substances were apprehended during targeted operations, leading to swift legal consequences. The Damongo Circuit Court convicted six offenders, each facing a fine of no less than 500 penalty units. This decisive legal action sends a strong message about the region’s zero tolerance for drug-related activities.

Speaking to Channel One News, Savannah Regional Minister Salisu Be-Awuribe emphasized the importance of these measures in safeguarding the community. He highlighted the Regional Security Council’s (REGSEC) intensified efforts to address security challenges in the region. “This is just a part of the ongoing exercise that we have actually taken up very seriously. We are happy the court is giving these sanctions and asking for the destruction of these illicit substances,” he stated.

The destruction of confiscated drugs not only serves as a deterrent but also symbolizes the region’s resolve to tackle this issue head-on. Minister Be-Awuribe reiterated that the use and trafficking of illicit drugs remain strictly prohibited, and offenders will face the full force of the law.

Rashida Ewuntomah, Savannah Regional Commander of NACOC, shed light on the Commission’s plans to enhance its operational capacity. She revealed that district and municipal offices are being established across the region to ensure a more robust response to drug-related activities. “We are hoping that it will be more effective and stronger as we embark on these activities. We are hoping that with the presence of the officers in these districts, they will have firsthand information for us. Before that happens, we are trying our best. We are working hard to bring them to book,” she stated.

The establishment of local offices is expected to improve intelligence gathering and streamline enforcement efforts. With officers stationed closer to communities, NACOC aims to respond swiftly to emerging threats and build stronger ties with residents who can provide valuable information.

These developments mark a significant step forward in addressing drug abuse and trafficking in the Savannah Region. The collaborative efforts between NACOC, the Ghana Police Service, and other stakeholders reflect a unified commitment to creating a safer environment for all. As enforcement measures continue to expand and strengthen, residents can rest assured that their security remains a top priority.

The fight against illicit drugs is far from over, but with sustained vigilance and community cooperation, the Savannah Region is poised to make meaningful progress in eradicating this challenge.
