In a significant breakthrough in the fight against human trafficking, the Ghana Police Service has successfully rescued 60 victims in a series of coordinated operations conducted between September 5th and September 19th, 2025. The announcement was made by COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), during a press conference held on Saturday, September 20th.

The victims include 41 foreign nationals rescued within Ghana and 19 Ghanaians who were rescued abroad. Following their liberation, all individuals have been handed over to the appropriate agencies to facilitate their reintegration with their families and communities. This marks a critical step in ensuring their recovery and protection from further exploitation.

“These operations form part of our ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking and protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation,” COP Donkor stated, underscoring the commitment of the Ghana Police Service to dismantling trafficking networks and safeguarding human rights.

A Call for Vigilance Against Deceptive Recruitment Practices

In light of the alarming prevalence of trafficking schemes involving false job offers, the Ghana Police Service has issued a stern warning to the public. COP Donkor urged individuals to exercise caution when responding to employment opportunities, particularly those requiring long-distance travel through multiple countries.

“No legitimate recruitment agency will require people to travel by road through several countries as part of an employment process,” she emphasized, highlighting a common tactic used by traffickers to lure unsuspecting victims.

The CID Director General also warned that recruiting or luring individuals under false pretences is a criminal offence punishable under Ghanaian law. She encouraged victims of trafficking to come forward and report their experiences at the nearest police station, assuring them of support and protection from law enforcement authorities.

A Collective Effort to Combat Human Trafficking

COP Donkor appealed to families, communities, and survivors to actively participate in the fight against human trafficking. By sharing experiences, staying informed, and working collaboratively, she believes that society can play a pivotal role in preventing others from falling prey to these criminal networks.

“This fight requires a collective effort. By working together, we can help prevent others from falling victim to these criminal networks,” she added.

The Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to combating human trafficking through proactive measures, public education, and collaboration with international partners. The successful rescue operations serve as a reminder of the importance of vigilance, awareness, and community involvement in addressing this global issue.

Protecting Vulnerable Individuals: A Shared Responsibility

Human trafficking remains one of the most pressing challenges facing societies worldwide. It exploits the most vulnerable individuals, stripping them of their dignity and freedom. The recent operations carried out by the Ghana Police Service highlight the importance of coordinated efforts and unwavering resolve in tackling this heinous crime.

As COP Donkor aptly stated, this fight requires a united front. Families, communities, law enforcement agencies, and survivors must come together to raise awareness, report suspicious activities, and support victims on their journey toward recovery. By doing so, Ghana can continue to make strides in eradicating human trafficking and ensuring that justice prevails.

Let this serve as a call to action for all stakeholders to remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding human rights and dignity. Together, we can build a society where exploitation has no place, and every individual has an opportunity to thrive free from fear.
