In a significant crackdown on examination malpractice, at least 14 individuals, including teachers, students, and invigilators, have been arrested across various locations in connection with the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The arrests, which highlight growing concerns over academic integrity, were reported at multiple examination centres nationwide.

Institutions implicated in the scandal include Yeji Senior High School, Abbott College in Asante Bekwai, Atwima Kwanwoma Presbyterian SHS, and several other centres. Addressing the media, Mr. John Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at the West African Examination Council (WAEC), disclosed that the number of arrests continues to rise as investigations unfold.

Mr. Kapi issued a stern warning, stating that the examination results of candidates from all affected schools will undergo rigorous scrutiny. He further revealed that the Adventist Day Senior High School centre in Kumasi had been shut down after multiple mobile phones were confiscated from candidates. To ensure the continuity of the exams, the affected students were relocated to WAEC's regional office.

Among the reported cases of malpractice, two individuals were apprehended at Kasoa for impersonation. Both have been sentenced to six months in prison, while an accomplice received an eight-month sentence. In another incident, the proprietor of Christian School in Kukurantumi and a teacher were arrested for creating a WhatsApp group to disseminate exam questions to students.

Additionally, in Abura Dunkwa, one Ebenazer Fynn was detained for impersonation and is currently under further investigation. These cases underscore the lengths to which individuals are willing to go to compromise the integrity of the examination process.

Mr. Kapi reiterated WAEC’s unwavering commitment to preserving the credibility of its assessments. He assured the public that stringent measures would be taken against any form of malpractice to uphold the standards of the WASSCE.

As the examinations continue, authorities are expected to intensify their vigilance to deter further misconduct and ensure a fair and transparent process for all candidates.
