In a landmark case underscoring the importance of child protection, the Odumase-Krobo Circuit Court has sentenced two men to 15 years each in prison for the defilement of a 13-year-old girl in Akuse, located in Ghana's Eastern Region. The ruling, delivered under Section 101 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), sends a strong message about the consequences of sexual abuse against minors.
The Convicts and Their Crimes
The individuals convicted in this case are Benjamin Awuku, a 46-year-old labourer and uncle of the victim, and Bismark Zinu, alias 'Bodor,' a 24-year-old labourer. Both men were found guilty of sexually abusing the young girl, who had been living with them and her mother. The court's decision marks a critical moment in holding perpetrators accountable for such heinous acts.
How the Case Unfolded
The case came to light on August 8, 2025, when Delight Princess Arthur, a child protection officer affiliated with the New Anointing Child Development Centre—a non-governmental organisation based in Akuse—intervened. Acting on reports that the victim was involved with an older man, Arthur invited the girl and her mother to her office for questioning.
Following these revelations, a formal complaint was lodged with the authorities, and the victim was sent to a hospital for a medical examination. The findings confirmed the abuse, providing critical evidence to support the charges.
Arrest and Confessions
Two days later, on August 10, 2025, police apprehended Awuku and Zinu at their hideout. During interrogation, Awuku admitted to both anal and vaginal intercourse with the victim. Zinu confessed to engaging in anal sex and making an unsuccessful attempt at vaginal penetration. These admissions further corroborated the victim's account.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
After thorough investigations, the court handed down its verdict, sentencing each of the accused to 15 years of imprisonment. The severity of the punishment reflects the gravity of their crimes and serves as a deterrent against future instances of child sexual abuse.
Authorities have assured the public that efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend Etornam, who remains at large.
A Call for Vigilance and Justice
This case highlights the critical role played by vigilant community members and organisations like the New Anointing Child Development Centre in protecting vulnerable children. It also underscores the importance of swift legal action in cases involving sexual abuse.
The sentencing serves as a powerful reminder that society must remain steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding minors from exploitation and harm. As we reflect on this case, let it inspire collective action to create safer environments for children everywhere.
Justice has been served—but the fight against child abuse continues.
