In a decisive operation aimed at curbing the environmental degradation caused by illegal mining, the Blue Water Guards have carried out a targeted swoop within the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality of the Western Region. The operation, which focused on areas along water bodies and forest reserves, sought to address the destructive activities of illegal miners, commonly referred to as "galamsey."
The swoop was conducted between Asikuma and Mensahkrom as well as on the Eshire River at Wassa Akropong. During the operation, the taskforce discovered illegal mining activities being carried out directly on roads, exacerbating their already deteriorated condition and posing significant challenges to transportation and infrastructure.
A statement released by the Blue Water Guards highlighted the scale of equipment and materials destroyed during the operation. In total, 30 Chanfang engines, 18 pumping machines, 19 shovels, five hammers, over 100 "outers," two diggers, a pipeline, 50 washing boards, and more than 50 washing blankets were dismantled. Additionally, five makeshift shelters were burned down, one gallon of diesel was seized, and a tricycle was impounded.
The operation also led to the arrest of three suspects who were handed over to the Wassa Akropong Police Command for further investigation. The statement emphasized the commitment of the Guards to ensuring that those responsible for illegal mining activities are held accountable for their actions.
Following the raid, the Blue Water Guards engaged with local stakeholders, including the committee chairman and the chief of the area. During these discussions, two excavators and four culverts were handed over by community leaders to assist in reshaping portions of the damaged road. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of community involvement in combating illegal mining and restoring affected areas.
The operation reflects the Blue Water Guards' unwavering determination to safeguard communities, protect vital water bodies, and preserve roads from the adverse effects of illegal mining activities. The environmental and infrastructural damage caused by galamsey remains a pressing issue in the Wassa Amenfi enclave, and such interventions are critical in mitigating its impact.
The Blue Water Guards reiterated their commitment to fostering sustainable practices and ensuring that local resources are preserved for future generations. Their efforts serve as a reminder of the urgent need for collective action to combat illegal mining and protect Ghana’s natural and infrastructural heritage.
