In a significant development in the fight against crime, police in the Western Region of Ghana have successfully apprehended four suspected armed robbers following a robbery attack on two Chinese nationals in Asankragwa. The incident, which occurred on March 12, 2026, involved the theft of cash and other valuable items.
The suspects, identified as Issaku Ibrahim (42), Fatau Ali (25), Yahaya Mumuni (26), and Emmanuel Antwi (22), are currently in police custody as investigations continue. Law enforcement officials retrieved an extensive cache of items from the suspects, including two pump-action guns, a Bruni Mod 84 Cal. 9 PAK pistol loaded with eight rounds of ammunition, an amulet or talisman, a machete, two CCTV decoders, GH¢198,200 in cash, 14 AA cartridges, and three mobile phones—an iPhone 13, a Nokia C300, and a Villovan phone.
The robbery was reported by one of the victims, Chen Zchao, a Chinese national residing in Malta, a suburb of Asankragwa. According to the police situational report, Mr. Zchao and his younger brother, Yao Chan, were at their spare parts shop around 6:30 p.m. when six armed men stormed the premises. The assailants made away with cash totaling GH¢200,000 and three mobile phones before fleeing the scene in a black Toyota Voxy vehicle.
Upon receiving the complaint, the Asankrangwa Night Patrol Team swiftly mobilized to pursue the suspects. The team, led by Inspector Stephen A. Bimpong and supported by other officers including D/Inspector Henry Baiden and G/Sgt. Seth Owusu Gyan, relayed the information to the Sumpre Police Checkpoint to intercept the fleeing robbers.
At approximately 8:00 p.m., a black Toyota Voxy vehicle matching the description provided approached the Sumpre police barrier. Upon spotting police officers at the checkpoint, the occupants of the vehicle attempted to escape on foot. However, coordinated efforts by officers at the barrier—including Inspector Anthony Annan Mills and G/Constable Joseph Asamoah—alongside the Night Patrol Team resulted in the successful arrest of four suspects.
In addition to these arrests, community members played an instrumental role in apprehending another suspect earlier in the day. This individual has since been handed over to the police to assist with ongoing investigations. Authorities are also working closely with local residents to locate a sixth suspect who remains at large.
This operation underscores the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies and community members in combating crime. The swift response by police officers and their coordination with local checkpoints highlight their commitment to ensuring public safety.
As investigations proceed, the suspects will be processed according to legal protocols. The police have assured the public that they will leave no stone unturned in bringing all perpetrators involved in this heinous act to justice.
The incident serves as a reminder of the continued vigilance required to curb criminal activities in Ghana’s communities. Law enforcement agencies encourage citizens to report suspicious activities and cooperate with authorities as they work tirelessly to maintain peace and security across the nation.
Stay tuned for updates as this case unfolds.
