In a case that has captured public attention, the Circuit Court at Dansoman, Accra, has sentenced a 24-year-old dispatch rider, Daniel Asiuebi, to 10 years in prison for his involvement in a robbery targeting the Secretary to the Namibian High Commissioner to Ghana. The sentencing, which was delivered on April 1, 2026, by Her Honour Nancy Teiko Searyoh, followed Asiuebi's guilty plea to charges of robbery and causing unlawful damage.

The Incident

According to the facts presented by Chief Inspector Kwadwo Aboagye, the robbery occurred on the morning of February 23, 2026. The complainant, Ms. Anneli Niinpungu Ananyanga, was walking along a street in the Airport Residential Area of Accra when Asiuebi approached her on a black Royal 125A motorbike with registration number M-25-GW 2512. In a brazen act, he snatched her handbag and fled the scene.

The stolen handbag contained a variety of valuable items, including an iPhone 15 Pro Max, a Huawei P50 Pro mobile phone, a Green Lion earpod, and a purse filled with identification and banking cards. The total value of the stolen items was estimated at GH¢36,176.00. Additionally, the bag contained important documents such as a Namibian diplomatic passport, a Namibian driver’s licence, a Ghanaian diplomatic card, and various other personal and official items. Cash amounting to GH¢500 and 160 Namibian dollars was also taken.

The Investigation

Ms. Ananyanga promptly reported the incident to the police. Through their efforts, the stolen iPhone was traced to Agbogbloshie, where it was recovered from an individual named Miracle Asare. This arrest led investigators to phone dealers operating at Kwame Nkrumah Circle and Dansoman, who admitted to purchasing the stolen devices from Asiuebi. Based on their testimony and further evidence, Asiuebi was apprehended.

In his caution statement to law enforcement, Asiuebi confessed to committing the robbery. He admitted to selling the stolen phones and using the proceeds for personal expenses. He also revealed that he had burned the remaining items from the handbag. Furthermore, Asiuebi disclosed that this was not an isolated incident; he had engaged in similar robberies in other areas of Accra, including Kaneshie, Achimota, and the Airport Residential Area.

The Court’s Verdict

During his first court appearance, Asiuebi pleaded guilty simpliciter to the charges brought against him. Taking into account his admission of guilt and the evidence presented by the prosecution, the court sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment during his second appearance.

The sentencing underscores Ghana's commitment to upholding justice and ensuring that criminal activities, particularly those targeting diplomats and foreign nationals, do not go unpunished. It also serves as a stern warning to others who may contemplate engaging in similar criminal activities.

A Cautionary Tale

This case highlights the importance of vigilance and swift action by law enforcement agencies in addressing crimes that threaten public safety and diplomatic relations. It also serves as a reminder of the need for individuals to remain cautious about their surroundings and personal belongings.

Asiuebi's admission of guilt and revelations about his involvement in other robberies further emphasize the necessity for continued efforts to combat street crime in urban areas. The collaboration between victims, police investigators, and informants played a crucial role in ensuring justice was served in this case.

With this sentencing, it is hoped that such incidents will serve as a deterrent to others and contribute to fostering a safer environment for all residents and visitors in Ghana.
