In a decisive operation aimed at curbing violent crime in the Upper East Region, the Ghana Police Service has successfully dismantled a notorious armed robbery gang believed to be responsible for a series of brutal attacks in the area. This intelligence-led operation, conducted on April 29, 2026, has resulted in the arrest of four suspects while two others were fatally wounded during a confrontation with law enforcement.
The operation targeted the gang’s hideout in Zuarungu, where police apprehended suspects Awudu Kasim, Malik Baako, Mohammed Amidu, and Wadud Abdul. A search of the premises yielded significant evidence, including a G3 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition. The weapon was reportedly hidden in the storage compartment of a motorbike that had been stolen from a victim by suspect Samsudeen Mohammed and an accomplice identified only as “DJ,” who remains at large. Additionally, seven other motorbikes suspected to have been stolen were recovered during the raid.
According to a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service, the arrested suspects have admitted their involvement in multiple robbery incidents across the region. Among these is a harrowing attack that took place on February 4, 2026, along the Zuarungu-Kongo road. During this incident, a bus driver, Ussif Abdul Razak, sustained gunshot wounds, resulting in the loss of three fingers. The gang is also alleged to have targeted cargo truck driver Mohammed Ibrahim on the same stretch of road.
Further investigations have linked the suspects to a robbery at the Kejetia mining site in Gbane on March 28, 2026. In this brazen attack, a miner identified as Atani Mark was reportedly robbed of cash and gold. Authorities revealed that the suspects had confessed to other criminal activities in the region, underscoring the extent of their operations.
Tragically, two suspects—Samsudeen Mohammed and Seidu Safianu—were injured during the operation and later succumbed to gunshot wounds. Their bodies have been transported to the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The four apprehended suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting investigators with further inquiries. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to locate and apprehend other members of the gang, including the elusive suspect known as “DJ.”
The Ghana Police Service has assured residents of the Upper East Region that it remains committed to ensuring their safety and security. Authorities have vowed to pursue all individuals connected to this criminal network and bring them to justice.
This successful operation underscores the importance of intelligence-led policing in combating organized crime and maintaining public safety. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities to aid ongoing investigations.
The dismantling of this armed robbery gang serves as a strong reminder that criminal activities will not be tolerated and that those who threaten public safety will face the full force of the law. The Ghana Police Service continues to work tirelessly to uphold peace and security across the nation.
