In a significant breakthrough against the illegal drug trade, police in the Eastern Region have arrested three suspects in connection with the possession of 1,600 parcels of suspected Indian hemp. The arrests were made during an intelligence-led operation that also thwarted a GH¢100,000 bribery attempt by one of the suspects.
Details of the Operation
According to a statement issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Eastern Regional Police Command, the operation was initiated following a tip-off about narcotics being stored at Akosombo-Bonya. Acting swiftly on this intelligence, police conducted surveillance near Krobo Girls Senior High School, where they intercepted a Hyundai Rhino truck with registration number GR 5724-15. The vehicle was subsequently tracked to a secluded location near Atua Government Hospital.
Upon arrival, officers discovered individuals transferring sacks from the Hyundai truck into a tipper truck with registration number GN 7948-21. However, the suspects fled into the nearby bush upon noticing the police. Despite their escape, law enforcement managed to secure both vehicles and the illicit cargo.
Bribery Attempt
Shortly after the seizure, a 39-year-old welder and resident of Atua approached the police and claimed ownership of both vehicles and the illegal consignment. The suspect revealed that the contraband was destined for Nigeria. In an attempt to compromise the investigation, he reportedly offered a bribe of GH¢100,000 to the officers.
Demonstrating professionalism and strategic acumen, the officers feigned interest in accepting the bribe to gather evidence. The suspect transferred GH¢90,000 via Mobile Money and provided an additional GH¢10,000 in cash. Once the transaction was completed, backup teams from the Regional Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU) and Odumase Police moved in to arrest him.
Apprehension of Accomplices
The investigation did not end with the arrest of the primary suspect. Two additional accomplices surfaced at the Regional Police Headquarters and were subsequently apprehended. Their involvement in the operation is currently under scrutiny.
Ongoing Investigation
The suspects, along with all exhibits including the seized vehicles and narcotics, have been handed over to the Regional Criminal Investigation Department (RCID) for further processing and investigation. Authorities have assured the public of their commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and ensuring that those involved face justice.
This operation underscores the importance of intelligence-led policing and highlights law enforcement’s resolve in combating organized crime. The Eastern Regional Police Command has called on members of the public to continue providing timely information that can aid in such operations.
Conclusion
The successful interception of this illegal consignment and the subsequent arrests represent a vital step in curbing drug-related activities in Ghana. It also serves as a reminder of the challenges law enforcement officers face daily, including attempts to undermine their integrity through bribery. The professionalism exhibited by the officers involved in this case is commendable and reflects their dedication to upholding the law.
As investigations continue, it is expected that those responsible will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, sending a strong message to others engaged in similar illicit activities.
