In a recent ruling by the Ho District Magistrate Court, two individuals from Ho, Yaovi Alorwonu and Samuel Agbeko, were handed a three-year sentence for their involvement in a burglary case. Alorwonu, a 31-year-old mason, and Agbeko, a 27-year-old driver, were found guilty of breaking into an unoccupied house in Sokode-Etoe and making away with electrical cables and sockets valued at GH¢31,340.

During their appearance in court on January 19, the defendants pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to steal, stealing, and unlawful entry. Despite lacking legal representation, both Alorwonu and Agbeko were sentenced to 12 months for each count, to be served consecutively.

However, the duo maintained their innocence regarding the charge of causing unlawful damage. According to Sergeant Kwadwo Otibu-Gyan, representing the Republic, the complainant, who resides in Hohoe, owned the unoccupied house in Sokode-Etoe which had been repeatedly targeted for theft, particularly of electrical cables.

The court was informed that on January 14, the accused individuals entered the property under the pretext of searching for scraps. They forcibly opened a door valued at GH¢2,000 and proceeded to steal the power cables. Alert locals apprehended the thieves as they attempted to leave, recovering the cut cables. The pair was then handed over to the police.

In their caution statements, Alorwonu and Agbeko admitted to the theft but denied causing damage to the door, claiming it was already open when they entered the house.

The sentencing serves as a reminder of the legal consequences of criminal activities and highlights the importance of safeguarding properties against theft and vandalism. It also underscores the role of community vigilance in apprehending perpetrators and upholding the law.

The case stands as a testament to the commitment of law enforcement and the judiciary in addressing criminal behavior and maintaining public safety. As such, it reinforces the principle that unlawful actions will be met with legal repercussions.

This ruling sends a clear message that criminal activities will not be tolerated, and those found guilty will be held accountable for their actions. It also emphasizes the need for individuals to respect the property rights of others and adhere to the rule of law.

Ultimately, the judgment serves as a deterrent to potential offenders and reaffirms the collective effort to uphold justice within the community.
