In a recent development, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has issued a strong call to the Police Service to promptly arrest the Member of Parliament (MP) for Yendi in the Northern Region. This urgent plea comes in the wake of a disturbing incident involving an attack on a journalist by the said MP.

The GJA has unequivocally reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to collaborate closely with the Police in order to ensure that justice is served in the aftermath of the reprehensible assault on journalist Mohammed Aminu Alabira, who is affiliated with Citi FM/TV. The association has condemned this deplorable act in the strongest terms, emphasizing that it should be denounced by all well-meaning citizens.

The distressing incident took place during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Primaries in the Yendi Constituency of the Northern Region, where Mr. Alabira was covering the proceedings. According to his account, he was subjected to physical violence by the MP, resulting in him being assaulted and subsequently rescued by security personnel from further harm inflicted by the MP's supporters.

The GJA has made it abundantly clear that such behavior is completely unacceptable, emphasizing that all individuals, regardless of their status, are subject to the rule of law. The association has issued a stern warning to politicians, stressing that as the political climate intensifies, any form of abuse towards journalists will not be tolerated.

It is imperative that swift and decisive action is taken to address this egregious violation, and the GJA stands firm in its resolve to pursue justice for the journalist who was unjustly attacked. This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of upholding press freedom and ensuring the safety of journalists as they carry out their professional duties.

The GJA's call for the immediate arrest of the MP underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for accountability. It is incumbent upon the authorities to act swiftly and decisively in upholding the rule of law and ensuring that such acts of violence are met with the full force of legal recourse.

As this issue continues to unfold, it is essential that all stakeholders remain vigilant in upholding the principles of a free and independent press, and in safeguarding the rights of journalists to carry out their vital work without fear of reprisal. The GJA remains resolute in its commitment to championing these fundamental principles and will continue to advocate for justice and accountability in this troubling matter.
