In a recent development, two individuals accused of impersonating Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, have been granted bail in the amount of GHc100,000. The accused, Promise Ahorgah, a phone repairer, and Kwaotse Mawuli, a building construction laborer, pleaded not guilty to six counts of allegedly defrauding unsuspecting Ghanaians.
The allegations against the two individuals involve the creation of social media accounts in the name of the North Tongu MP to solicit funds on behalf of victims affected by the Akosombo and Kpong Dam Spillage. This led to their arrest on December 13 and subsequent remand into the custody of the National Signals Bureau pending further investigation.
During their court appearance on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, the accused's legal representation led by Simon Animley requested bail after their clients pleaded not guilty. Despite opposition from Assistant State Attorney Derek Ackah Nyamekye, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo granted bail in the sum of GHc50,000 each with a surety each to be justified. Additionally, the court imposed the condition for the accused and their sureties to deposit their Ghana Card to the registry of the Court.
The charges brought against Promise Ahorgah and Kwaotse Mawuli include counts of defrauding by false pretenses, charlatanic advertisement, and falsely pretending to be a public officer. The prosecution outlined that the accused individuals modified the MP's disaster donation drive flyer and inserted their phone numbers, subsequently soliciting cash donations from the public.
It is important to note that these are allegations at this stage and the accused individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to uncover further details surrounding the case.
This case serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with online solicitations and the importance of verifying the authenticity of donation drives. As the legal proceedings continue, it is crucial to uphold the principles of justice and fairness for all parties involved.
