We regret to inform the legal community and the general public about the disbarment of Samuel Nerquaye-Tetteh, a Chief State Attorney at the Office of the Attorney-General. The General Legal Council (GLC) has taken this unprecedented step due to his involvement in a professional misconduct case.
The disciplinary committee of the GLC found Mr. Nerquaye-Tetteh guilty of breaching Rule 2(2) of the Legal Profession (Professional Conduct and Etiquette) Rules, 1969 (L.I. 613). Specifically, it was discovered that he had personally orchestrated the transfer of GH¢400,000 from businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome to the bank account of his wife while defending the state against a lawsuit by Woyome in 2011.
Mr. Nerquaye-Tetteh's inability to provide a reasonable explanation for this transfer led to the conclusion that his actions had tarnished the dignity and high standing of the legal profession. Consequently, the GLC has revoked his practicing license, prohibiting him from holding himself out as a lawyer or providing any form of legal services to the public.
This decision, signed by the Judicial Secretary, Justice Cynthia Pamela Koranteng, serves as a reminder of the high ethical standards expected of legal practitioners. The legal profession plays a crucial role in upholding justice and integrity within society, and any misconduct by its members is taken very seriously.
It is our hope that this unfortunate incident will underscore the importance of maintaining professional conduct and ethical behavior within the legal fraternity. We trust that this decision will uphold the credibility and trustworthiness of the legal profession in Ghana.
