We are deeply disturbed by the recent incident at Bechem Presbyterian Senior High School (PRESEC) involving the alleged gang rape of a 15-year-old form one student by four students of the same school. The Duayaw-Nkwanta Circuit Court has granted GH¢100,000 bail with two sureties each to the four accused students, while two other suspects charged with aiding and abetment of the crime were also granted GH¢100,000 bail with two sureties and one to be justified.

The court proceedings were held in camera, and the accused individuals are to remain in police custody until they are able to meet the bail conditions. It is important to note that one suspect, believed to be the ringleader of the gang, is still at large, and the police are actively pursuing this individual.

The next hearing, which will involve a case management conference, is scheduled for Monday, March 18, 2024. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Daniel Gadzepke, the prosecutor, has indicated that the plea of the suspects will be addressed during this hearing.

It is disheartening to learn that the victim was allegedly lured and handed over to the perpetrators by an accomplice. A medical report from the Duayaw-Nkwanta St John of God Catholic Hospital has confirmed that the victim was indeed raped.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of students within educational institutions. It is crucial for schools to have robust measures in place to prevent such heinous acts and to provide support to victims.

As we await further developments in this case, our thoughts are with the victim and her family. We hope for a swift and thorough investigation to ensure that justice is served. It is imperative that all necessary support is extended to the victim during this challenging time.

We urge all stakeholders, including the school authorities, law enforcement agencies, and the community at large, to work together to prevent such atrocities and to create a safe environment for all students. Our collective efforts are essential in upholding the rights and dignity of every individual, especially within educational settings.
