We are deeply concerned about the recent incident at Bechem Presbyterian Senior High School (PRESEC) involving the severe beating of a student by a teacher. The welfare and safety of students should always be a top priority in any educational institution, and it is imperative that the circumstances leading to this unfortunate event are thoroughly investigated.

The victim, Ebenezer Yeboah, a final year Visual Arts student, is currently receiving treatment at the Bechem Government Hospital after being subjected to severe beatings by a teacher for allegedly failing to pay "dining fees." The extent of his injuries, as reported by the Ghana News Agency (GNA), is distressing and raises serious concerns about the use of corporal punishment in schools.

It is heartening to note that the school authorities have taken initial steps to address the situation. The headmaster of the school, along with two management members, has visited the victim at the hospital and has promised to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. We commend this prompt response and urge the Ghana Education Service (GES) to further investigate the incident to ensure that justice is served.

The appeal made by Mrs. Lawrinda Yeboah, the mother of the victim, for expeditious investigations by the GES is justified. It is essential that all parties involved, including the teacher in question, are given the opportunity to present their accounts of the events. The GES should conduct a fair and transparent inquiry to ascertain the facts and take appropriate action in accordance with the law and educational regulations.

We also acknowledge the statement from Mr. Yaw Frimpong, the Public Relations Officer of the Tano South Municipal Directorate of Education, regarding the official notification from the school's headmaster to the Directorate. We trust that the Directorate will oversee the investigative process and ensure that due process is followed.

The use of corporal punishment as a disciplinary measure in schools is a matter of great concern, and it is important for educational institutions to promote alternative positive disciplinary methods that uphold the dignity and well-being of students. We call for a review of disciplinary policies and practices within schools to prevent any form of physical or emotional harm to students.

As we await the outcome of the investigations, our thoughts are with Ebenezer Yeboah and his family during this challenging time. We hope for his speedy recovery and trust that measures will be taken to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

In summary, we emphasize the importance of creating a safe and nurturing environment for all students within our educational institutions. Any form of violence or abuse against students is unacceptable, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that every child receives an education free from fear and harm.

We will continue to monitor developments in this case and urge all parties involved to prioritize the well-being and rights of the students.
