In a recent case heard at the Ashaiman District Court, a 24-year-old trader named Kingsley Oduro was fined Gh₵ 600 for the theft of a wheelbarrow. The presiding judge, Mr. Derick Parden Eshun, imposed the fine after Oduro pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing.

According to the prosecution, the complainant, Ebenezer Oduro, who is a wheelbarrow pusher residing in Kaketo, Ashaiman, reported that his wheelbarrow was stolen on January 15, 2024. The complainant had left the wheelbarrow beside him while he slept at the Champion Bet Centre at Kaketo. Upon returning from a brief absence, he discovered that the wheelbarrow had been taken.

The prosecution further revealed that a witness informed the complainant that she had seen the accused, Kingsley Oduro, pushing the wheelbarrow away. Subsequently, Oduro was apprehended at Tsinagbe in Ashaiman and handed over to the police.

During police interrogation, Oduro admitted to stealing the wheelbarrow and disclosed that he had sold it to a third party for Gh₵70 in Tema. Despite efforts by the police to locate the buyer in Tema, Oduro was unable to assist in identifying the individual.

As part of the court's ruling, Oduro was ordered to pay a fine of Gh₵ 600 and to refund the complainant the sum of Gh₵700, representing the price of the stolen wheelbarrow. Failure to pay the fine would result in a six-month imprisonment with hard labor for Oduro.

This case serves as a reminder of the consequences of engaging in theft and the importance of respecting the property rights of others. The swift actions of the witness and law enforcement in apprehending the perpetrator demonstrate a commitment to upholding justice within the community.
