We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Kwabena Gideon, a 23-year-old mobile money vendor from Awutu Bereku in the Central region. It is reported that he took his own life due to the immense pressure of a 16,000 Ghana cedis debt incurred from mobile money transactions.

According to Yaw Boagyan of GHOne News, Kwabena Gideon suffered this substantial loss within a span of just two weeks. The owner of the mobile money business had lodged a complaint at the Awutu Bereku Police station, stating that his employee had mismanaged GHC16,000 and had also taken measures to evade contact by deleting social media pictures and turning off his mobile phone.

A neighbor, Faustina Asare, disclosed that Kwabena Gideon had been visibly distressed by his financial situation. She recounted seeing him standing quietly behind a building on the morning of February 24, 2024, and later discovering his lifeless body at the same location.

Kwabena Gideon, who was married and had a one-year-old son, tragically succumbed to the pressure he was facing. It is reported that he ingested poison, leading to his untimely demise. The authorities have initiated an investigation into the suspected suicide, and his body has been taken to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital for autopsy and preservation.

In light of this devastating event, Nai Ncharkey Okai VII, the Adontenhene of the Awutu Traditional Council, has urged Ghanaians to seek support from their loved ones and friends during challenging times. He emphasized the importance of fostering a community where individuals can lean on each other for support in times of hardship.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a poignant reminder of the impact of financial distress on individuals and the importance of mental health support. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Kwabena Gideon's family and loved ones during this difficult time.
