In a recent court case in the Western Region, two individuals have been sentenced to four years imprisonment for their attempt to escape from lawful custody. Evans Sarpong, 24, and Desmond Ampong, 23, found themselves in trouble after conspiring to break part of the wall in the Bawdie police cell.

Both unemployed, Sarpong and Ampong pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit crime and attempting to escape from lawful custody. The case was brought before the Tarkwa circuit court, where they received their sentence.

According to Superintendent of Police Juliana Essel-Dadzie, who prosecuted the case, the complainants were police officers operating in Bawdie. Sarpong had been arrested for stealing a billy goat, while Ampong was nabbed for a motorbike theft at Fahia Korbor near Obuasi. Both individuals were detained in the Bawdie police cells for investigation.

The incident took place on October 25, 2023, when the station officer heard an unusual noise in the cells at about 0200 hours. Upon investigation, Sarpong was found chiseling the wall with a shower head in the toilet room, while Ampong stood guard at the entrance of the cells. Their plan was to escape together once the wall had been breached.

Following their arrest, both individuals admitted to the offences in their caution statements during interrogation.

It is clear that Sarpong and Ampong's actions were a serious breach of the law, and the court's decision to sentence them to four years imprisonment reflects the gravity of their attempted escape. This case serves as a reminder of the consequences of attempting to evade lawful custody and the importance of upholding the rule of law.

The swift response of the station officer in apprehending the individuals also highlights the dedication of law enforcement officers in maintaining security and order within their jurisdiction.

Ultimately, this outcome underscores the principle that attempts to undermine the justice system will not be tolerated. It is hoped that this verdict will serve as a deterrent to others who may contemplate similar actions in the future.
