We are deeply concerned by the recent criminal activities that have taken place in the Kade area of the Eastern Region. A 42-year-old Taxi Driver, Kwabena Nyame, has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in hard labour for robbery. This comes after he pleaded guilty to two counts, receiving a ten-year sentence for each count, both to run concurrently.
The first count of robbery took place on 14/03/2024 at the Goil Filling Station in Subi, near Kade. The accused, Kwabena Nyame, along with an accomplice, attempted to rob the filling station, a criminal offence contrary to section 23(1) of the Criminal Offence Act 1960(Act 29) and section 149 of the Criminal Offence Act 1960.
The second count occurred on 14/04/2024 in Kade, where the accused and his accomplice targeted a businessman named Kwaku Gyima. It was revealed in court that the accused persons had planned to rob the victim's house and had even gone as far as showing the location to their accomplices.
However, their plans were thwarted when their accomplices, who were not actually interested in the robbery, leaked the information to the police. This led to a coordinated effort between the witnesses and the police to stage a fake robbery in order to apprehend the main culprits.
During the staged robbery, the police were able to arrest Kwabena Nyame, while his accomplice managed to escape initially but was later apprehended at a different location. Incriminating items such as a face mask and a jack knife were found on Kwabena Nyame at the time of his arrest.
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and vigilant citizens in combating crime. It also highlights the significant role played by witnesses in ensuring that perpetrators of criminal activities are brought to justice.
We commend the efforts of the witnesses and the police in this case and hope that this outcome brings a sense of closure to the victim and serves as a deterrent to others who may contemplate engaging in similar criminal activities.
It is our sincere hope that incidents such as these will become less frequent as we continue to work together to create safer communities for all.
