The Upper West Regional Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has announced the interception of a significant quantity of chemicalubstances suspected to be sodium cyanide.  A total of 250 drums containing the suspected chemicals were discovered stockpiled near the Black Volta River at Zikpiri, awaiting transportation to Burkina Faso.

The discovery was made on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at approximately 1:45 p.m., during a routine patrol operation conducted by GIS officers from the Nadowli District Command along unapproved border routes.  The consignment has been transferred to the Nadowli Police Station for safekeeping and further analysis.

In a press release issued by the Regional Public Affairs Unit, the GIS stated that its intelligence network has been activated to identify and apprehend those responsible for the illicit operation.  The seizure underscores the GIS's ongoing efforts to combat cross-border criminal activities.

The operation highlights the effectiveness of a recently implemented 24-hour manning system at all known unapproved border routes in the Upper West Region, initiated by the Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Immigration (DCOI) Justice Bosomtwi-Ayensu.  This system, coupled with regular patrols, aims to deter and disrupt illegal cross-border activities.

The GIS has issued a stern warning to individuals involved in illegal cross-border dealings, emphasizing its unwavering commitment to suppressing such activities.  The statement unequivocally cautioned: “We caution the general public to desist from any form of cross-border crime. The few recalcitrant persons whose livelihood depends on illegal activities along our territorial borders must either stop or be stopped. There are no ‘ifs’ or ‘buts.”  The investigation into the origin and intended destination of the suspected sodium cyanide is ongoing.
