A tragic incident in Yesunkwa, a community near Ataabadze in the KEEA District of the Central Region of Ghana, has left residents and family members in a state of shock and grief. A 34-year-old woman, Maame Ekua Badu, was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend, Jehoshaphat Adiako, on August 2, 2025. The suspect is currently on the run, and the victim’s family is calling for swift and decisive action to bring him to justice.

 A Troubled Relationship

According to John Kofi Cobbinah, an uncle of the deceased, Maame Ekua had shared concerns about her relationship with Jehoshaphat Adiako prior to the tragic event. Speaking to Connect FM’s Omanbapa Morning Show on August 14, Mr. Cobbinah recounted how his niece had approached him earlier this year to discuss her relationship with the suspect.

“In May this year, my niece, Maame Ekua Badu, called and informed me that she had found a man, Jehoshaphat Adiako, who had expressed interest in marrying her. I advised her to take her time to thoroughly monitor the behavior of the man before agreeing to his proposal,” Mr. Cobbinah explained.

However, the relationship deteriorated quickly. By June, Maame Ekua had reportedly informed her uncle that Jehoshaphat had begun threatening her. She even took the step of reporting his behavior to the police. Mr. Cobbinah mentioned that he personally intervened by cautioning Jehoshaphat to stay away from his niece. Despite this warning and Jehoshaphat's expressed intention to meet with Mr. Cobbinah, no meeting ever took place.

 The Day of the Incident

The events leading up to Maame Ekua’s death unfolded tragically on the morning of August 2. Mr. Cobbinah revealed that he missed a call from his niece at approximately 9:44 a.m. When he attempted to return the call, no one answered. Shortly thereafter, he received a call from Jehoshaphat, who claimed that Maame Ekua had left home to pick okro from a nearby pastor but had not returned.

The situation quickly escalated when Jehoshaphat’s responses became evasive and inconsistent. “When I later called my niece’s number, the boyfriend answered, but after hearing my voice, he dropped the call,” Mr. Cobbinah recounted.

Desperate for answers, Mr. Cobbinah contacted the pastor mentioned by Jehoshaphat. The pastor confirmed that Maame Ekua had never arrived to collect the okro. The family’s search for her ended in heartbreak when her lifeless body was discovered in a nearby bush. Preliminary reports suggest that she may have been struck with a hammer, as her head was severely injured and her teeth broken. She was rushed to Interbeton Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Community in Mourning

The gruesome nature of the crime has sent shockwaves through the community of Yesunkwa. The suspect, Jehoshaphat Adiako, reportedly fled the area shortly after the incident and remains at large. The Elmina Municipal Police Command has taken up the case, but the victim’s family has expressed dissatisfaction with the pace and manner of the investigation.

“We are devastated and demand justice for Maame Ekua,” Mr. Cobbinah stated. The family is urging law enforcement authorities to intensify their efforts to apprehend the suspect and ensure that justice is served.

 A Call for Justice

This tragic case underscores the urgent need for stronger measures to address domestic violence and protect vulnerable individuals in relationships. It also highlights the importance of thorough and transparent investigations by law enforcement agencies to restore public confidence and provide closure for grieving families.

As the community mourns the loss of Maame Ekua Badu, her family’s plea for justice serves as a somber reminder of the devastating consequences of unchecked violence. The hope remains that authorities will act swiftly to bring the perpetrator to account and prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Our thoughts are with Maame Ekua’s family during this difficult time. May her soul rest in peace.
