In a significant breakthrough, the Ghana Police Service has apprehended ten individuals accused of orchestrating a sophisticated online fraud scheme involving fake food delivery platforms. The arrests were conducted by the Cybercrime Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) after weeks of meticulous intelligence gathering.
The first wave of arrests occurred on October 1, 2025, in Sogakope, where six suspects — Wonder Sakpiti, Sedinam Amaglo, Godsway Dunyo, Angela Agblemekpe, Mathew Aheto, and Fafali Amoah — were detained during a targeted operation. According to preliminary investigations, these individuals were allegedly operating fraudulent websites and social media accounts impersonating popular food brands such as Papaye, Pizzaman, KFC, and Mawarko.
The modus operandi of the suspects involved creating convincing online platforms that deceived unsuspecting customers into placing food orders. Victims were instructed to make advance payments via mobile money services but never received their orders. Further inquiries revealed that in some cases, the suspects exploited their victims by gaining unauthorized access to their mobile money and bank accounts under the guise of assisting with payment issues. Funds were subsequently withdrawn without consent.
Digital devices linked to the fraudulent activities were seized during the operation and are currently undergoing forensic analysis to uncover additional evidence.
The investigation expanded to Accra, where the ringleader, Elijah Sotama Etse, also known as "Pop Smoke," was apprehended alongside accomplices Elliot Sotama Atsu, Jethro Atsu, and Obed Selasi Agboli. The arrests took place on October 12, 2025, at their hideout in Haatso. Authorities recovered twelve mobile phones believed to have been instrumental in executing the fraudulent operations.
All ten suspects are presently in police custody and are expected to appear before the court today, Monday, October 13, 2025.
The Ghana Police Service has urged members of the public who may have fallen victim to similar scams to report to the nearest police station to assist ongoing investigations. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance when engaging with online platforms and making digital transactions.
