The Savannah Regional Police Intelligence Department has successfully apprehended 24 Togolese nationals on suspicion of engaging in illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as "galamsey," in the West Gonja Municipality of Ghana.

The arrests were carried out on Friday, January 23, 2026, following the interception of a Kia truck with registration number BA 223-12. The vehicle, driven by Abdul Majeed Yakubu, was stopped by police personnel during a routine operation. Upon interrogation, the individuals onboard admitted to being citizens of Togo and disclosed their intention to travel to Tuntumba, a community known for illegal mining activities.

The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for further immigration and legal procedures. Authorities have indicated that the necessary steps will be taken to address the situation in accordance with the law.

The Savannah Regional Police Intelligence Department has confirmed that investigations into the matter are ongoing. Additional details regarding the case are expected to be released as the inquiry progresses.

Illegal mining, or galamsey, continues to pose significant environmental and socio-economic challenges in Ghana. Authorities have intensified efforts to combat the practice, which has been linked to deforestation, water pollution, and other forms of environmental degradation.

The arrest of these individuals underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies to curbing illegal mining activities and ensuring that those involved face justice. The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activities related to illegal mining to the appropriate authorities.
