In a determined effort to combat crime and uphold the law, the New Juaben South Municipal Police Command has conducted a successful raid on a suspected brothel in Dabiasem, a suburb of Koforidua, leading to the arrest of 15 young women. The operation, which took place on Tuesday, February 10, is part of ongoing law enforcement efforts to address human trafficking and illicit activities in the Eastern Region.

According to Superintendent Ransford Nsiah, the Municipal Police Commander, the raid was prompted by a complaint lodged by a Nigerian woman who alleged that she had been assaulted by her mistress, known only as “Queenmother.” The victim reportedly faced physical abuse after failing to meet a daily financial target of GH¢400 imposed by her alleged trafficker.

During the operation, authorities apprehended the suspects, whose ages range from 15 to 32 years. Additionally, a man believed to have constructed and operated the house as a brothel was also taken into custody. Superintendent Nsiah revealed that the alleged ringleader was collecting GH¢25 per day from each woman involved in the activities. The police also uncovered that one of the individuals in custody is a minor, aged 15.

The suspects are currently being held in police custody and will face legal proceedings for their alleged crimes. Superintendent Nsiah stated that charges against the young women include soliciting for sex, while their female matrons face charges of assembling for an unlawful purpose. These alleged offenses contravene provisions under the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) and the Human Trafficking Act, 2005 (Act 694).

Speaking at a press briefing in Koforidua, Superintendent Nsiah underscored the police’s commitment to ensuring justice is served. He noted that investigations are ongoing and assured the public that the suspects would be arraigned before the High Court.

In addition to addressing this specific case, Superintendent Nsiah emphasized that the police are intensifying efforts to curb similar criminal activities within the municipality. He announced plans to heighten operations during upcoming festive periods, such as Easter, to ensure public safety and maintain law and order.

The Municipal Police Commander further assured residents of the New Juaben South Municipality that his command remains resolute in its mission to create a safe and secure environment for all. He urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities promptly.

This decisive action by the New Juaben South Municipal Police Command serves as a stern warning against human trafficking and commercial sex activities in the region. It also highlights the importance of community cooperation in combating crime and safeguarding vulnerable individuals from exploitation.

As investigations continue, this case underscores the need for sustained vigilance and coordinated efforts between law enforcement agencies and the public to address societal challenges and uphold justice.
