In a significant breakthrough, the Police Anti-Armed Robbery Unit (AARU), operating under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters, has successfully neutralized a notorious criminal who adopted the guise of a house help to rob unsuspecting employers. The operation, which culminated on Friday, was the result of meticulous intelligence gathering and investigative efforts.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, shared details of the case during an interview in Accra. According to the IGP, the investigation began after a 77-year-old woman, Madam Christiana Frimpong, reported an armed robbery at her residence in Labone on December 4, 2025. The victim recounted a harrowing ordeal where armed robbers restrained her by tying her hands and legs, covered her face with a plastic bag, and made away with her Toyota Hilux pickup (registration number GW 9834-25), an iPhone 16PRO Max, and other personal belongings.

Following the report, police investigations led the AARU team to Danso Village, situated between Bawjiase in the Awutu Senya District of the Central Region and Adeiso in the Upper West Akyem District of the Eastern Region. After four days of extensive intelligence work, the suspect was identified as Clement Kofi Aidoo, also known by aliases Yaw, Paddy, or Joseph Abequaye. Notably, Aidoo had been employed as a house help by Madam Christiana prior to the incident.

Upon encountering the police, Aidoo attempted to attack them using a sharpened cutlass. However, he was subdued through gunfire and subsequently rushed to the Police Hospital in Accra, where he succumbed to his injuries. A search of his possessions revealed several stolen items, including Madam Christiana's Toyota Hilux pickup, personal documents, her phone, and identification cards belonging to Number 48935 G/Constable Daniel Kusi Appiah.

Further investigations uncovered that Constable Appiah, now a Sergeant stationed at Kaneshie Divisional Headquarters, had also fallen victim to Aidoo. In November 2025, Sgt. Appiah had unknowingly employed Aidoo as a house help through a recruitment agency in Accra. However, on November 14, 2025, Aidoo absconded with Sgt. Appiah's Toyota Camry saloon car (registration number GC 123-12), cash amounting to GHC 12,200.00, and other personal belongings after abandoning Sgt. Appiah’s elderly father at an undisclosed location.

Police inquiries revealed that Aidoo's true identity was Joseph Obisse, a native of Bontroase in the Central Region. This revelation underscores the importance of conducting thorough background checks during domestic help recruitment processes.

The Inspector General of Police took the opportunity to caution individuals and recruitment agencies to exercise due diligence when hiring domestic workers. He emphasized that such incidents highlight the need for robust screening measures to ensure the safety and security of households and employers.

This successful operation by the AARU serves as a testament to the commitment of law enforcement agencies in ensuring public safety and safeguarding citizens from criminal elements. The police continue to urge members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
