In a commendable display of courage and swift action, seven officers of the Ghana Police Service have been promoted following their successful intervention in an armed robbery incident in Tema earlier this week. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, announced the promotions on Tuesday, recognizing the officers' valor and dedication to duty.
The incident unfolded on Monday, April 13, 2026, when two suspected armed robbers reportedly shot a mobile money vendor in Tema. The suspects, attempting to flee the scene, were intercepted by a police team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jean Kpelli, the Tema Regional Police Operations Commander. The ensuing pursuit and exchange of gunfire resulted in the suspects being neutralized.
The Heroes Behind the Operation
Among the promoted officers is Chief Inspector Enock Nartey Nuer, who received special recognition for his exemplary service. Chief Inspector Nuer had just completed his Police College entrance examination on Sunday, April 13, 2026, and was granted leave until Wednesday, April 15. However, demonstrating exceptional commitment to duty, he voluntarily reported to work on the same day as his examination and participated in the high-stakes operation.
Two other officers, Inspectors Gershon Dekpey and Prince Asante, were elevated to the rank of Chief Inspector. Additionally, Sergeants Lukman Mohammed Alenbinde and Eugene Kuudouru were promoted to the Inspectorate rank. Corporal Jerome Akator advanced to Sergeant, while Lance Corporal Jonathan Sewurah was promoted to full Corporal status.
The IGP also noted that the status of DSP Jean Kpelli, who led the operation with distinction, is under review at the highest level, signaling potential further recognition for his leadership.
The Incident: A Timeline of Events
According to a senior police source who spoke to *The Chronicle*, the incident occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m., just 100 meters away from St. Paul Methodist Church in Community One. At the time, Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang was attending a program at the church. The sound of gunfire near the venue prompted security personnel to investigate.
DSP Jean Kpelli and his team identified a black Royal motorbike with registration number M-24-GE778 speeding away from the area. The officers pursued the suspects to Community Ten, where the robbers opened fire on the police. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, both suspects were fatally injured.
Evidence Recovered at the Scene
The police recovered a black 9mm Luger pistol at the scene of the shootout. A subsequent search of the suspects revealed a blue handbag containing three live rounds of ammunition, one spent shell, three Android mobile phones, assorted SIM cards, a Ghana Card bearing the name Mavis Mensah, a talisman, a Royal motorbike ignition key, and cash amounting to GHC11,390.00. The items were taken into custody for further investigation.
The Tema Regional Crime Scene Management Team reconstructed the scene and forwarded the recovered firearm to the Central Firearm Registry to determine its ownership. Similarly, the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA) will assist in ascertaining ownership of the motorbike.
Victim Receiving Medical Attention
The female mobile money vendor who was shot in the foot during the robbery was rushed to Tema General Hospital for treatment. Her condition is reportedly stable.
A Testament to Dedication and Courage
This incident highlights not only the dangers faced by law enforcement officers but also their unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property. The swift response by DSP Jean Kpelli and his team prevented further harm and ensured that justice was served.
The promotions granted by IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno serve as a well-deserved acknowledgment of these officers' bravery and dedication. Their actions exemplify the highest ideals of public service and reinforce public confidence in the Ghana Police Service.
As investigations continue into this case, it serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance, professionalism, and courage in maintaining law and order in our communities.
