In a significant breakthrough, a joint operation by elite units from the Police Headquarters, supported by a special squad from Bekwai Police in the Ashanti Region, has resulted in the arrest of two key suspects linked to the tragic killing of Berekum Chelsea footballer, Dominic Frimpong. The arrests took place on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, following a high-stakes investigation and manhunt that spanned multiple regions.
The Incident
Dominic Frimpong, a 20-year-old footballer on loan from Aduana FC to Berekum Chelsea, met his untimely death during a highway robbery on the night of Sunday, April 12, 2026. The incident occurred at Kwame Dwomor and Sheresu, along the Bibiani-Kukuom road in the Ahafo Region. Frimpong and his team were returning home after a week 29 league match against Samartex FC in Samreboi, located in the Western Region.
The robbery, which tragically claimed the young athlete's life, prompted swift action from law enforcement. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, immediately assembled a specialized team of detectives from the National Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) and the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit (AARU) under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Their mission was clear: to identify and apprehend those responsible for this heinous act.
The Investigation
The special investigation team arrived in the crime area on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. Backed by the versatile Special PID squad based in Bekwai, Ashanti South Region, the detectives wasted no time in gathering intelligence. A critical breakthrough came when they interviewed a farmer who claimed to have witnessed the robbery from a concealed location.
Following this lead, the detectives identified one of the suspects as Mohammed Ahmed, also known as "I Can Do." Ahmed was located at his hideout in Atimatim, Kumasi. Upon encountering law enforcement, Ahmed reportedly engaged in a shootout with the officers but was overpowered and critically injured. He was subsequently taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital under heavy police guard for medical treatment.
During his time in custody, Ahmed allegedly confessed to his involvement in the robbery and implicated several accomplices. These included Dauda, Hoefe, Bawa Gideon—also known as "War Leader"—and A.J., aka "Okoro," who is believed to have driven the gang to the scene in a Toyota Voxy. Ahmed also admitted to participating in other criminal activities, such as a robbery at Nkasiem Police Station and the murder of a mobile money vendor in Fufunso.
Arrests and Seizures
The investigation led to the swift apprehension of Bawa Gideon, who corroborated Ahmed's confession and admitted his own involvement. During the operation, police recovered significant evidence, including:
- One foreign pistol loaded with two rounds of 32mm auto ammunition
- Eleven rounds of ‘BB’ cartridges
- One cutlass
- One pepper spray
- Two pairs of desert boots
- Assorted mobile phones
- A black hood
A Web of Organized Crime
According to reliable sources within the police department, Mohammed Ahmed is believed to have established multiple robbery groups operating across various regions of Ghana, including Western, Ashanti, Bono, and Eastern Regions. His modus operandi involved recruiting members from diverse areas such as Yeji, Atebubu, and Walewale. These individuals were reportedly kept unaware of each other’s identities and only convened during planned robberies before dispersing to their respective hideouts.
