In a recent development in the Ashanti Region, a 39-year-old teacher, Eric Apaflo Buernortey, has been re-arraigned before the Nyinahin District Court on charges of assaulting a student. The incident, which has garnered significant attention, initially led to Buernortey's arraignment following its occurrence on June 8, 2026. However, the case was subsequently withdrawn by the police, resulting in the discharge of the accused.
The current proceedings mark the second time Buernortey faces the court regarding this matter. Presiding over the case is Lord Delvin Essandoh, a relieving judge at the Nyinahin District Court. The court has granted bail to Buernortey, setting the sum at GH₵80,000. The bail conditions stipulate that three sureties, who must reside within the court's jurisdiction, accompany the accused. Furthermore, Buernortey is required to report to the case investigator bi-weekly on Mondays.
The court has issued a stern warning against any misinformation being disseminated by the public concerning the case. "The public is hereby cautioned against any misinformation in respect of the matter, as any misinformation would not be tolerated," stated the court.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Eric Owusu, provided a detailed account of the incident. The complainant, Patricia Chibu, an 18-year-old final-year student at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School, was allegedly assaulted by Buernortey, who also serves as a tutor and caretaker of Adusei Hostel adjacent to the school.
According to the prosecution's narrative, on June 8, 2026, Buernortey confronted Chibu and other male students residing in the hostel regarding misconduct. During this confrontation, Chibu reportedly insulted and mocked Buernortey, provoking him. In response, Buernortey allegedly attacked and assaulted Chibu.
The situation escalated when Chibu summoned local residents to the scene, who attempted to lynch Buernortey. A timely intervention by a Police Patrol Team averted further violence. Both Buernortey and Chibu were subsequently taken to the police station. Chibu received a police medical form for treatment and later returned it duly endorsed by a medical officer.
Following these events, Buernortey was detained as investigations were conducted, during which a caution statement was obtained from him.
As the legal proceedings continue, this case highlights the critical importance of maintaining decorum and adherence to legal processes in resolving disputes within educational settings. The outcome of this case will likely serve as a precedent for handling similar incidents in the future.
