In a recent development regarding the contract between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML), Samuel Atta Akyea, the Chairman of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, has addressed the ongoing speculation and concerns.

Refuting claims of Ghanaians being shortchanged in the contract, Atta Akyea dismissed such assertions as mere propaganda. He emphasized the need to await the findings from President Akufo-Addo’s initiative and engage formally based on KPMG’s assessment. Atta Akyea cautioned against hasty branding of the deal as a conduit for political bribery, urging for a more informed and evidence-based approach to the matter.

SML, in response to an investigative report by the Fourth Estate, clarified that the contract in question is a 5-year contract, not a 10-year contract as previously suggested. Additionally, SML denied allegations of extracting $100 million annually from the contract.

During a fact-finding visit to the Tema division of SML, Atta Akyea highlighted the importance of not jumping to conclusions without a comprehensive understanding of the situation. He urged for a more discerning approach, particularly in light of the world-class audit being conducted by SML.

Yaa Serwaa Sarpong, the Director of Support Services at SML, reiterated the positive impact of the contract, stating that it has assisted the GRA in fully actualising the potential of tax revenue on petroleum products in the downstream petroleum. According to Sarpong, SML has implemented measures such as check meters to support GRA in this endeavor.

As this issue continues to unfold, it is imperative to exercise prudence and patience in drawing conclusions. The forthcoming findings from President Akufo-Addo’s initiative and KPMG’s assessment will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the situation. It is essential for all stakeholders and concerned parties to await these findings before making further judgments or allegations.

The complexities of such contracts and their implications for national revenue require a thorough and diligent approach. As more information comes to light, it is crucial for all involved to prioritize transparency, accountability, and adherence to due process. This will ensure that the best interests of the nation and its citizens are upheld.
