Sampa Township in the Bono Region was the site of a high-impact joint security operation on Friday, March 21, 2026, which resulted in the arrest of 24 suspects and the recovery of a significant cache of weapons and suspicious items. Authorities have described the operation as a major breakthrough in combating illicit arms proliferation and organised crime.
The coordinated operation involved personnel from the Ghana Police Service, the 3rd Infantry Battalion (3BN) of the Ghana Armed Forces, and the Bureau of National Intelligence (BNI). Intelligence gathered on suspected criminal activities within the area served as the foundation for the meticulously planned exercise.
Weapons and Items Seized
An official statement from the Ghana Police Service revealed that eight firearms were confiscated during the operation. These included five pump-action guns, one Baikal gun, and two locally manufactured weapons. Additionally, security forces recovered 790 rounds of AAA and BB cartridges, as well as one AK-47 round.
A variety of items believed to be associated with violent and organised crime were also uncovered. Among these were 21 machetes, four bayonets, six knives, five clubs, and several pairs of black and desert boots. Investigators expressed particular concern over the discovery of two foreign military jackets and two body armours—one missing its metal plate—raising suspicions about potential impersonation or quasi-militant activities.
Other items seized included eight motorbikes, a rickshaw, assorted mobile phones, tools such as pliers and a chisel, and a quantity of talismans. Notably, an official stamp bearing the inscription “Nana Samgba Gyafla II, President, Sampa Traditional Council” was also recovered. This discovery is expected to undergo further scrutiny as investigations continue.
Suspects in Custody
The suspects, whose ages range from 13 to 78 years, are currently in police custody and assisting with investigations. Two individuals, identified as Sie Emmanuel and Mensah Kofi Emmanuel, were separately apprehended for violating curfew regulations imposed in the area. Police have indicated that preparations are underway to arraign all suspects before court.
Public Cooperation Sought
The Bono Regional Police Command has urged members of the public to assist security agencies by providing credible information that may lead to additional arrests or the dismantling of criminal networks involved in illegal arms possession and related activities.
A Renewed Approach to Security
The Sampa operation underscores Ghana’s security agencies' commitment to adopting intelligence-driven strategies to address emerging security threats and curb the proliferation of illicit weapons across the country. Authorities have pledged to intensify efforts to ensure public safety while dismantling networks linked to organised crime.
This successful operation marks a significant step forward in enhancing national security and demonstrates the effectiveness of inter-agency collaboration in addressing complex criminal challenges.
