In recent news, the Student Representative Council (SRC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has found itself amidst a storm of controversy following the acquisition of a Toyota Hardbody LX Pickup for a staggering GH₵ 850,000.00.

The intended purpose of bolstering campus security through this acquisition has sparked widespread criticism across various social media platforms. The Abuah-Reginald-led administration of 2021 initially contributed GH₵350,000.00 towards the purchase, with the subsequent Frank-Deborah administration of 2022 adding an additional GH₵500,000.00 to the pot.

The official commissioning of the vehicle was presided over by the Yvonne-Nkay-Led Administration, with key stakeholders including KNUST Management, representatives from the Abuah-Reginald Administration, and the Frank-Deborah Administration in attendance. However, rather than receiving applause, the decision to allocate such a substantial amount towards a single vehicle has incited widespread indignation among the student body.

Many have taken to social media to express their outrage over what they perceive as a gross mismanagement of resources. Questions have been raised regarding the rationale behind such an exorbitant purchase, especially in light of pressing needs within the university community.

Critics argue that the hefty price tag of GH₵850,000 could have been more judiciously invested in academic resources, student welfare initiatives, or infrastructure development. Calls for transparency and accountability regarding the decision-making process behind the purchase have intensified.

It is evident that the SRC's decision has ignited a significant level of discontent and concern among the student body. As stakeholders continue to voice their disapproval, it remains to be seen how the SRC will address and respond to these mounting criticisms.

The need for open dialogue, responsible allocation of resources, and a focus on addressing the genuine needs of the university community has never been more apparent. It is imperative that the SRC takes these concerns seriously and engages in a constructive and transparent manner with the student body to address this issue and prevent similar controversies in the future.
